WHY SHOULD WE BOTHER WITH AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT?
Congratulations you’re finally engaged and you are starting to plan your wedding. There are so many things to think about and start planning. You’re maybe checking out photographers and what they have to offer. One thing you’ll find is over the last few years engagements photo shoots also known as pre-wedding shoots / e-sessions have certainly become popular with engaged couples and photographers alike.
Some couples may be on the fence as to whether they need an engagement shoot whilst others can’t wait to start planning theirs and having some fun photos as an engaged couple.
As a wedding photographer, I believe that having an engagement shoot can be beneficial for both myself and you as my client. Here are some reasons as to why I feel an engagement session is a good thing to do prior to your wedding day.
1. They help you to get more comfortable in front of the camera
Let’s be honest most of us are just not comfortable in front of a camera, so the thought of having photos taken by a professional photographer normally strikes fear into our hearts. What does this often lead to? Well stiff bodies, overthinking, arms and legs take on a life of their own and let’s not forget those all-important smiles becoming grimaces!!
Unfortunately, this can then be portrayed in the photos and you maybe left disappointed because all you’ll be able to see is how uncomfortable you were and how awkward you felt.
So, having an engagement shoot can really help you to relax and get used to being in front of a camera. You’ll get used to being on show as your guests will have cameras/ phones and want a piece of the photo action. An engagement shoot will hopefully help you forget about being in front of the camera so you can just be natural with each other.
2. It will help us get to know each other better
Getting to know me, getting to know all about you!!
Whilst this session is helping you to relax in front of the camera it also gives us the opportunity to get to know each other a little better.
All photographers have a different way of working and interacting with couples. So, this will be a great way for you to get familiar with my style of photography, which is natural, relaxed and honest. My engagement sessions last 60 minutes so this will give plenty of time for you to relax, for us to chat and interact with one another. It gives me the opportunity to see you interacting as a couple and what your comfort zones are in front of the camera. This can help me to understand you so I get your wonderful moments on your wedding day.
3. Quality time together as a couple
I think one of the absolute best reasons for having an engagement session is so you can get some quality time together and document your relationship.
Planning a wedding can be so stressful and all time consuming and leaves you with very little time for each other. So, by having an engagement shoot you can take a break from planning and be together in the moment. It’s a chance to reconnect with who you are and just be yourselves with each other.
An engagement session will really help to capture your true selves and your personalities in a more natural and relaxed atmosphere. To do this its best to choose a location that has meaning to you, makes you relaxed so it can bring out your personalities. I say this because on your wedding day although it’s about capturing you on your perfect day you will still have pressures to get through and you won’t be totally relaxed as a million things will be running through your mind. Plus being surrounded by your nearest and dearest your true selves might get held back a bit.
4. How to use your engagement photographs?
Finally having an engagement shoot gets you some fab photos, of you enjoying life together, being yourselves and getting ready for one of the biggest days of your lives. It also means you have some lovely photographs which can then be used as Save the Date cards, Guest Signing Frames. If you’re feeling brave you can have them dotted around your reception as part of the decoration. Or you could have them put into an album /coffee table book to proudly show off to you friends.
So, if you and your other half would like to feel less intimidated and more comfortable in front of the camera, plus have a chance to get to know your photographer a little better. Spend some quality time together to escape the stress of wedding planning and get some beautiful images to use as part of your wedding then you need to book an engagement session NOW!!
